Lumin Wakoa
Lumin Wakoa paints from memory, bringing the past to life through multiple revisions of painting, sanding, scraping, removal, and re-painting.
Often appearing as abstract landscapes, Wakoa builds her paintings up in repeated overlapping layers of earth, often contrasting colors. They are often split into multiple registers—halves or quarters, which create a disorienting effect, or the feeling of multiple narrative happening simultaneously, much like the ways memories and dreams relive themselves in the present moment. Wakoa leaves her paintings purposefully open-ended, and are a mix of intention and invention, fact and fiction.
