Case Jernigan, Studio Visit
I’m making an autobiographical video game out of cut paper and ink drawings called ‘Bub.’ The player moves into a microcosm of mixed media animation and electronic music to control the process of turning childhood memories into art.
A friend died when I was 12 and Mom said ‘Don’t worry, he’s sittin’ in heaven next to Jesus.’ If I prayed REALLY hard, I could hear Jesus too.
Evangelical Christianity drained out of me slowly. I still find hidden pockets of it tucked away. My short films and work in games naturally filled the excavated space. My work takes on a spiritual importance to me that I find misguided and thrilling at the same time.
I make work about religious zeal, psychological transference, hazing and bullying, panic attacks and anxiety. I use my hands to repurpose old slides and photographs, craft rough sculptures, and draw and paint frames that become animation. I eschew scripting or planning in order to accidentally stumble into fresh methods of storytelling.
