Buhm Hong, Studio Visit
My studio is located in Dumbo, Brooklyn in Sharpe Walentas Studio. Wooden planks cover the floor and scattered across the large white walls, are my various artworks. The picture above showcases the graphite finger paintings, which were drawn by hand with pens and pencils. The shading in the artworks were created by graphite powder and perfected by smudging the pencil lines with my finger.
Next to the graphite finger paintings is the first sketch to a piece of artwork that I am working on. Carefully drawn with a pen and ruler, it is a staple first step in creating my works.
Depicted above is the typical next step of the process: filling in the ink and hatching by hand, ensuring that every corner is complete. During this process, the lines begin to look like waves or the patterns of a tree trunk and it’s always very intriguing to see this naturally occur in almost all of my drawings.
I also want to touch on how these drawings and pieces of artwork are born. I draw based on inspirations from my own life, interactions and what I see. One example are abandoned buildings I saw during my walks around the neighborhood. These types of buildings spark ideas, thoughts and even help me recall personal memories that are later transported into my pieces of art. My drawings aren’t meant to represent a precise place that I have been to, instead the drawings are a result of my imagination coupled with my own experiences.
On the table are multiple different artworks. These days I am working on multiple different projects and drawings at the same time, each drawing takes a large amount of time in finishing and I want to make sure that each line is carefully and intricately drawn.
On the side of the table are my future plans for my drawings. I spend a lot of time making plans and it is challenging and difficult when creating different architectural layouts and components that all represent the thoughts and ideas I have. It’s just like a difficult puzzle, although at times frustrating, it is extremely enjoyable as well.
At first it may seem like nothing more than just white walls covered full of interesting looking artworks. But, with a deeper look one can possibly expand their own thoughts and express the emotions they feel. That is another point to my work, I want people’s thoughts to be able to freely roam around with the help of my artwork. I am also working on a 3D animation work, ‘Cabinet Of Moments’, which is based on the concepts and ideas of my drawings. There is a link on my website where you can see my previous video works. An ongoing challenge I have for myself actually developed in a conversation I had with my fellow Artist Jason Saager, who recommended me to paint with the yolk of an egg. One of my all time favorite artists Giotto, drew tempera paintings with this method. As I paint with the egg tempera, I feel like I am connecting with the artists from the Middle Ages. I think it is a rare, fresh and fun new experience for me.
