The Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program

Beginning with the 2014-2015 studio grant cycle, The Walentas Family Foundation has partnered with The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation to continue to provide free studio space in New York City through the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, formerly known as The Space Program. This partnership will provide for the continuation of The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation’s important legacy and the largest free non-residential studio program in New York City.

Opened in Tribeca in 1991, The Space Program moved to DUMBO, Brooklyn in 2008. The program is available to 17 individual artists who are chosen by a jury of professional artists from an annual pool of more than 1,100 applications. Since its founding, The Space Program has awarded studio space to more than 350 American artists.

The Foundation’s Artists Advisory Committee—Cynthia Carlson, Chuck Close, Janet Fish, Philip Pearlstein, Irving Sandler, Harriet Shorr, and Robert Storr—initiated and developed The Space Program in 1991 as a service to living artists. In 2006 artists Phong Bui, Matthew Deleget, and Tara Donovan were added to the Artists Advisory Committee. The Artists Advisory Committee will continue to work in tandem with the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program’s management team.

Walentas Family Foundation

The Walentas Family Foundation is a private foundation established to make significant annual contributions to institutions and programs in support of the arts, education and community development. The foundation reflects the family’s values and commitment to the steadfast stewardship of the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, Brooklyn waterfront revitalization and leadership initiatives in civic engagement in New York City.

As the founding developer of the now thriving waterfront community of DUMBO, the Walentas family has long supported the arts through the development of their own personal collection, fiscal sponsorship of leading and emerging cultural institutions and generous subsidies and donation of space to artists and arts groups who have played a vital role in the establishment of DUMBO as a world-renown destination for art and culture.

In the current economic climate of increased operational costs and cuts in government funding, The Walentas Family Foundation is committed to supporting initiatives to further the creative, cultural, and civic discourse that is at the core of progress and growth for New York City.
