Erick Alejandro Hernandez makes predominantly large-scale paintings featuring multiple figures captured in moments of intense emotion or introspection.
Sometimes organized around a shared event—a car crash, a punch on a sidewalk, a sudden death—Hernandez’s paintings express the irreconcilability of shared events with individual interior experience. For him, the paintings are about the collision of memory, history, and emotion, and all become fragments of larger narratives that the viewer may or may not be able to access. One has a sense of eavesdropping on his paintings, both through the intimacy with which characters’ emotions are shown, and the sensitivity of the scenes depicted. His explorations into personal traumas encompass broader themes of immigration (specifically revolving the Cuban diaspora), exile, mental health, romance, cultural heritage, and the experience of loss.
