Cesar Cornejo
Cesar Cornejo’s work explores the relationship between art, architecture, and society, to create sculptures, site-specific installations, and drawings that portray contrasting aspects of society, recomposing them in new settings that challenge our perception of reality.
His work often addresses issues facing his home contry of Peru, but has also been greatly influenced by his experience living and working in Japan, London, and New York.
Since 2007 he has been working on the site “non-specific” project Puno Museum of Contemporary Art, which redefines the concept of contemporary art museum to transform it into a community based institution. It offers residents of low-income areas in the city of Puno-Peru, to repair areas in their homes at no cost to their owners, in exchange for presenting contemporary art exhibitions in those repaired spaces for a period of time. For this project Cornejo was awarded a Creative Capital Artist Grant in 2009.
