Hong Seon Jang

Hong Seon Jang creates installations from a variety of man-made materials and common objects such as tape, metal type, aluminum foil, floor tile, and furniture.

His work emphasizes or upends the traditionally held understandings of these everyday materials, distorting or subverting common meanings to offer new or heightened readings that redefine conventional functions, roles, and values. Originally from South Korea and currently residing in the US, his sculptures draw upon his heterogeneous backgrounds and social, cultural and political subjectivities to question the complex relationships between authority and subordination, nation and citizen.
