Sarah Williams

Combining theatrical techniques of stage lighting and set design, sculptor Sarah Williams draws from ballet, dance, opera, theater, and classical music to make dramatic, intricate sculptures.

The resulting stage-like structures are made through a process of cannibalization and rebirth, mending and destroying simultaneously, as her studio process borrows heavily from dance and vocal structural juxtapositions such as chorus vs duet, piano vs forte, overture vs finale. At times, Williams also records the progression of her pieces in set lists or notational scores that act as an accompaniment to her sculpture.
