Todd Bienvenue is a classical oil painter who depicts contemporary scenes culled from his personal everyday life, recreating intimate moments and images captured on his cell phone. Bienvenu paints quickly, cataloging and fixing his surroundings upon canvas. His paintings incorporate humor, sex, and hedonism and are candid and funny, unpretentious and direct. Ranging from humorous still lives of simple objects – shopping bags, cans of beer, stop signs – and portraits of friends to depictions of the beach or the pool, wrestling matches, and concerts, his work features loose brushstrokes and boxy renderings that recall the unflattering portraits of Willem de Koonig and Philip Guston.
