Marianna Peragallo is an artist and sculptor whose recent anthropomorphic works are playful self-portraits that explore the cross-sections of love, labor, endurance, and support.

Recalling the aesthetics of children’s books and toys, from which we first learn (or mislearn) about love, the intimately sized sculptures are contorted in impossible gestures that have mutated beyond the possibilities of the human body to perform an action: provide light, hold boundaries, or support another sculpture. Her recent “body language” series interrogates the characterization of love as saccharine manipulation, opposed to profound mutual support. These works feature feet, hands, or fingers that are busy doing: lifting, climbing, reaching, and, most importantly, giving and receiving support.
