Alejandro Guzman

Alejandro Guzman is an interdisciplinary artist working in performance, painting, sculpture, and installation.

Guzman’s practice draws upon his involvement with an array of Caribbean spiritual traditions, including the Petrorada approach of Haiti, the Vejigante of Puerto Rico, and the Nkisi of central Africa. In his performance, Guzman invites myriad individuals to come together in ecstatic ritual actions that result in totemic mixed-media sculptures that can also double as costumes or be moved around on wheels like stage sets. Their ramshackle geometry feels both homemade and temporary, to suggest that the act of making may be more important than the object that results. The artist’s goal is to dissolve boundaries between esoteric spiritual practices and art making, fostering shared, nonhierarchical creativity.
